We chanced upon this lovely place on a walk in the area during the summer. We chose to book it as a big birthday treat and it did not disappoint. The wonderfully secluded situation with great walks from the doorstep suited us perfectly .The stylish and comfortable accommodation, the delicious food and knowledgeable and courteous staff made it a very special occasion and we would most certainly return.

From booking to the end of the dining experience everything was perfection.Old Downton Lodge is a hidden gem, filled with history, a talented team, topped with fine wine and an exquisite culinary offering. On arrival we received a warm welcome, followed by impeccable service, a divine menu and phenomenal food. Each course was delightful, served by a knowledgable team and with thought put in to curate tantalising mouthfuls. We would highly recommend and look forward to visiting again in the future.Thank you.

I am absolutely disgusted by how this hotel have treated a family member in recent weeks. A room was booked at The Old Downton Lodge by a returning guest, around 6 weeks in advance. 5 weeks prior to the booking her husband was involved in a serious accident and very sadly died. The booking was cancelled and the hotel have withheld £50 of the deposit under a ‘cancellation fee’. The manager had the audacity to announce that it will be honoured on the next visit?!? Like she will be visiting as a widow. Utterly shocking customer service and I can safely say I will be urging and broadcasting strongly that people do not stay here. After emails back and forth to management asking to waive this due to extenuating circumstances, their responses have been cold, and somewhat brutal. Awful customer service.

Stunning Hidden away gem of a lodge. Incredibly cosy and elegant- staff are exceptional and rooms well equipped. Location is remote but the quiet is infectious. The high pitch of bees humming can be heard over the countryside surrounding the grounds. Parking / Hot Water / WiFi all excellent. Breakfast was a very very good and dinner although we didn’t have the time was rated by other guests as best in class.

A special place. Gorgeous garden and our room was lovely with a split level between the large bathroom and the bedroom and windows in 2 sides. We enjoyed the tasting menu and chatting with the sommelier - nice walk down to the river too. Recommended for a special treat in this lovely part of the world.

Very special, hidden away in rural Shropshire.Charms too many to list. Probably the best aspect is the staff. Would go again for sure.

Exquisite dining experience, in the most beautiful of Shropshire settings. Gardens in full sunlight, and under a full moon, English green magical rooms of colour with planting to dream of. A taster menu, wine flight to remember forever. Four poster bed to take to. Think romance, think excellence, think perfection. Very special place, very special people.

An utterly beautiful location, sympathetically renovated buildings, stylish rooms and charming garden space. We were so delighted to stumble upon Old Downton Lodge for a weekend break. The service was impeccable start to finish (a special thanks to Winter and Tomasz), wonderful seasonal food and a cracking bar.

Didn’t stay but very impressed with the fine dining experience in the restaurant. We had the tasting menu with matched wines. The whole experience, the food and the service were easily worthy of a Michelin star in our opinion….. A warm welcome into the bar for a glass of English sparkling wine (very pleased so many places are now serving this in place of champagne) and canapés then through to the table in the dining room, back to the bar for coffee and petit fours. Both rooms were medieval heritage style, like having dinner in a castle, beautiful decor and ambience. The chef was happy to substitute one item on the tasting menu that I didn’t think I would like and the sommelier even paired a new wine for me for the new flavour profile. The menu was creative and very well presented. Courses were carrot, hake, duck, cheese, and two sweets. I particularly enjoyed the carrot dish, exquisite flavours with dill and hazelnut. The Sommelier, Tomasz , was very knowledgeable and friendly and gave us a full run down of each wine. The wines were a superb enhancement to the flavour profile of each dish. Thoroughly enjoyable evening for my partners birthday. If you are coming by taxi be sure to book early as we had to ring several companies the day before to find one that was free.

We had a wonderful stay. Beautiful room, excellent cuisine, great martinis (stirred not shaken) and inspiring walks in the Shropshire countryside. We will be back as regulars.

Tucked away, cosy inn but with a luxurious feel. The rooms are beautiful (although found the bed a bit firm). The absolute stand out is the restaurant experience, incredible food and the staff are absolutely brilliant, attentive, knowledgeable but also very friendly. The bar area is lovely for drinks and the courtyard a great sun trap, even at the end of September. We enjoyed some brilliant walks through the countryside right from the door, fuelled by the very good breakfast.
